Join us for this summer session and listen to the double bass player’s debut LP!
Divided into three movements, the compositions sapiently mix jazz, folk, and reinterpretations of songs from the Abenaki First Nation.
Movement One starts with the evocative ballad “Odana” and Mali’s bass moves from a one-note ostinato to a walking-like bass that supports the exhilarating reeds/horns lines. “Wawasint8da” is based on a beautiful Jesuit hymn, accompanied by marching/military-style drumming that then transforms into an Albert Ayler-esque free jazz track.
The second and third movements continues on side b, where the beautiful blend of folk, field recordings, traditional songs, and jazz keeps unfolding. Lots of love, passion, and knowledge – musical and cultural – went into the record but Mali Obomaswin managed to keep writing, arrangements, and playing very accessible without being banal.
