Astral Traveling 14 – Kolkhida – Kolkhida (1976)

Continuing our listening session series exploring personal connections to specific albums, I’m glad to introduce this very special recording. Released on the Soviet state label Melodiya in 1975 by Georgian ensemble Kolkhida, their self titled and only album is one of my most cherished – and undefinable – records.
To the ear that can listen past a certain kitsch inherent to some of the folk themes and context of the times, this is an album full of emotional depth, complex traditional polyphonies and surprising takes on Prog Rock, Soul, Jazz-Funk and Psychechedelia.
As a special treat for this evening, we will be serving a selection of Georgian natural wines by the glass.
