“Crudely recorded live improvisations that he has sliced up, pared down and spritzed with effects and extra instrumentals. Part concert bootleg, part hip-hop mixtape, his music — borne of a process rather than a compositional method — has the potential to open up the way musicians think about improvisation.” (NY Times)
Drummer, beatsmith and composer McCraven distinguishes himself for his approach to production. “Where we came from”, like his other records, is made up entirely editing down and overdubbing live sessions. In this case of two of the most bleeding-edge jazz scenes — London and Chicago. Marrying jazz’s spontaneity and electronic music’s polish with a musical sensibility derived from hip hop Makaya is one of the most interesting and exciting voices of contemporary music.
A selection of records from the Chicago and London contemporary jazz scenes will be played afterwards.
